It was pretty close back in the day but Mario has just gotten better while Sonic has gotten worse but has had a recent comeback... sort of.
If we are talking just the pre-Mario 64 days then I would say its very close but I might just give the edge to Sonic. If we include all Mario and all Sonic games then its a clear win for Mario.
