I've got to do General Studies too- what does it involve? I heard that it had French in it, so I'm hoping that I'm not going to completely fail it :( |
I'm sure it depends a little on the exam board, mine was OCR btw. It's a weird subject that can potentially involve pretty much anything. On OCR, we 4 papers (two taken at the end of each year), each consisting of a few 4 or 5 mark questions and then 1 or 2 essay questions (some where one had a choice, but on others not). I was lucky and had a disproportionality high amount of political, economic and social based questions, which I consider my strongpoint, so I found it a walk in the park (one on fascism, one on the growth of individualism, one on the effects of greater Government spending on infrastructure amongst others). But others years, I'm sure there were lots of natural science based questions, for example.
One key point to remember is that you need a broad general knowledge to do well, not at all a deep knowledge of the question asked. If you have a deep knowledge of what the question is about, you're laughing. Another point is that most universities don't count it in your offer (as most don't take it seriously as a subject, which is the same as most students in fact). That said, it wouldn't harm your application. The reason my 6th form college made in compulsory was that Hampshire County Council treated it like any other A-level and therefore gave a shit load more funding to my 6th form as in their eyes students there were doing 4 full A-levels.
