What are A-Levels? Like college prep level classes in high school?

In the U.K, they are part of education for academic minded 16-18 year olds.  Here, compulsory education stops at 16 (I think it's going up soon though), so I wouldn't refer to it as the U.K eqivilent of high school, but it is similar.  Most people do 4 subjects for their first year and drop one before moving to the second, the dropped subject is considered a seperate qualification known as an AS level.  Depending on the part of the U.K, they are either taught in school or at a seperagte 6th form college (which is usually a inbetween step for school and uni, for example mine didn't have any uniform).  They are the main educational achievement used towards university applications.
