First, let me say that this movie is going to piss people off. It is being advertised as a blockbuster action movie, when it is a more story driven character study.
The strongest plus, for the most part, is the story. It was very compelling, and gripping. Unlike most 100M+ movies, I didnt find myself bored during the exposition, hoping for an action scene to redeem the poor acting or story. Additionally, while not usually a Will Smith fan, I think he did a very good job with his role.
However, the movie is very flawed. The biggest problem being the pacing. The movie builds in a very calculated manner. And then, the big reveal is unvailed during a frenzied action scene and the movie concludes minutes after. I saw the movie with four people, who I would all consider intelligent, and we honestly didnt understand the ending.
Overall, I wouldnt say pass this up. The good parts are exceptional. However, the ending needed maybe something more epic, and at very least more explanation. Apparently even the studio must agree, since when the first cut was given to them they asked for last minute reshoots. This is the hardest type of movie to dislike, because it seemed like there was intergrity in making it. However, what could have been a classic was spoiled by an abrupt and somewhat nonsensical ending.
And in regards to much talked about bad special effects... The animals looked awful, there is no need to computer animate animals that arent extinct yet. However, the vampires were scary, but more because of the sound than visual effects.
