Republic and democracy describe different aspects of government. Being a republic simply means your are not a monarchy, being a democracy means that your government is elected. America is both a republic and a democracy.

This! I don't see why people find this distinction so hard to grasp. Granted, I could see why conservatives in the US (who are part of the REPUBLICan party) would have in interest in such intellectual dishonesty (their opponent is the DEMOCRAT party, and I assume this sillyness gives them the illusion that they're more 'legit').
