You need to be either Cursed (some frogs in the Deep do that) or use an item called Transient Curse (or something - it's use is limited to time, though). You can start with 2-3 and you'll find more along the way exploring, or you can buy some from a merchant (not cheap).

Cheers, also should I purhase the kits that allow me to enhance equipment at bonfires? For some reason I am finding prices a bit steep atm, in terms of souls - I never tend to have more than 5k at a time, so can't really buy some of the premium stuff..

its nice to have, sure, but dont buy it yet, since you wont need it in the beginning. as you said, its premium stuff.

edit: Am a gravelord Servant now ^_^ the miracle i got for joining is badass, its summoning 20 Blades out of the ground, can be used 2 times.
