Yup, this, Nintendo have a small dedicated userbase of probably under 20 million (at least for consoles) unless Nintendo came up with a console that hit it off like Wii again could they sustain generation after generation with a 20 mill userbase? |
LIVE is hard to chew through, certainly, though an inter-generational fault line is really the only time anyone can even try, but Sony's lead in EMEAA is mostly due to superior supplier relations in that area (where Nintendo especially has always had a diminished presence simply for a lack of having consoles available for sale), one that could be handily broken down were someone willing to try
Mostly, however, Nintendo can prosper so long as they actually remain in the multiplat loop this time (and third parties don't actively conspire to put them out of the loop as they did for no good reason other than spite in the GC days), and otherwise continue to chart the course that they did with the Wii. The masses of samey third party games can provide whatever it is the market's looking for that's distinct from what Nintendo themselves provide
