I actually switched from treadmill to elliptical machine.  I had to because I hurt my knee somehow on the treadmill one day and it took like a month or so to heal.  I then tried the elliptical machine (which I previously viewed as girly) and noticed there is pretty much no impact on the knees.  I re-injured my knee again a few months back and it has finally healed again so I am going to start working out again soon at my apartments gym.  Putting the machine on the hardest resistance makes it a decent work out if you go for at least 30 mins.
