L4D got survival mode after Gears. That Doom video was from the multi-player campaign. That AVP video--I could be wrong but it just looked like some kind of death match using bots. Never heard of it, though so I could be wrong. Still, you have to use a loooooot of imagination to say that is like Horde mode. And The Outfit was just four player campaign, too (and it's a strategy game).
But you are sorta right. I remember having Spawn on the Dreamcast and it was basically team up to kill a group of enemies in an arena. It sucked hard, though. I'll look at it like this: Mario wasn't the first platformer but it was the first platformet to do the genre justice. As a result, it spawned a billion 2D knockoffs. Gears is the finest implementation of a "Horde Mode" compared to anything before it. In a way, it's just an online team death match vs. some incredibly varied AI controlled opponents. So there.
