Co-op/multiplayer features of Dark Souls?

Does anyone know what the features for coop gameplay for Dark Souls are?  Can you invite specific people or is it random like Demon's Souls?  Can anyone that can read Japanese reviews summarize this?

I got my pre-order in just in time before the collector's edition ran out.....
