At least Steam does it all in the background, but sometimes I wonder why can't they make it a bit smarter. Re-installing directx all the time, repairing microsoft .net framework etc etc.
And then you have the occasional epic screw ups like the 9gb patches for the downloadable version of The Witcher 2.

good thing he didn't want a little witcher 2 action  like me a while ago hadn't played it for a while and had to endure not 9 but 18gb dl

Hey, at least nothing updates as bad as the iPhone/iPad where it just redownloads the whole ap.

thats what worries me , as far as I could tell the 18gb DL for witcher 2 was it downloading a fully patched version of the whole game , while I don't know it for fact , I suspect that they wern't happy with the normal patch results and decided that they had to fully intergrate them into the game and that meant a full game redownload , At least I hope thats the case because going down that road fulltime is crap.
