At least Steam does it all in the background, but sometimes I wonder why can't they make it a bit smarter. Re-installing directx all the time, repairing microsoft .net framework etc etc.
And then you have the occasional epic screw ups like the 9gb patches for the downloadable version of The Witcher 2.

good thing he didn't want a little witcher 2 action  like me a while ago hadn't played it for a while and had to endure not 9 but 18gb dl
