Report: German post-war intelligence agency hired Nazi war criminal
Berlin - The foreign intelligence service of West Germany hired a Nazi war criminal as an agent in Latin America in the late 1950s, the online edition of German tabloid Bild reported Sunday, citing newly released documents. According to the report, Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) knew of the background of former SS member Walther Rauff when they hired him. Born in 1906, Rauff was a marine officer, Nazi party and SS member who was responsible for developing and deploying deliveries of poison gas used for killing humans. In 1947, after escaping from an internment camp in Italy, he settled in Latin America. He became a businessman in Ecuador, where he was approached by BND member Wilhelm Beissner, a former member of the Nazi security services. Rauff received intelligence training between 1960 and 1962 despite being wanted for arrest. Until 1963, he was paid more than 70,000 German marks (ca 45,000 dollars) for his intelligence services, which according to the BND proved to be 'largely worthless.' Historian Martin Cueppers of University of Stuttgart told Bild that 'the documents show that a complete club of Nazi insiders formed itself here in the BND. And this at a time when the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was increasing its hunt for Nazi war criminals.'
