I read your reply that this thread was made specifically with me in mind. That disturbs me a bit since everyone knows I am highly against threads that divide the community. Luckily the wording in this thread was good but the idea that it was bait to see what I would say is sorta well either bad or good.
If its bad, then its to draw me into yet another flame war where I will get out numbered and assaulted for a couple pages
If its Good, you actually want my opinion and to see me post in your thread. Well that's sorta flattering not many users especially the highest ranked user on VGChartz (edit, what your second highest now thats too bad)actually goes out creating a thread with the soul purpose of chatting with another user. You know Spurgeonryan you could have just messaged me the question or posted it on my wall if that was the full purpose of the thread.
While I have made it pretty obvious lately that I don't like all these religious threads. But based on how you presented the thread not taking an anti or pro religious sentiment I will most definitely contribute.
The idea of where God comes from depends largely on your world view and religious beliefs.
I personally believe the idea behind God comes from the fact that he created the earth. To me its something that is based in logic and faith. Obviously since you know I am Christian you know I believe in the Bible which makes God's existence pretty much impossible to deny. You can't believe in the Bible and not acknowledge God's existence.
However if you ignore faith and religion and honestly believe man made God up, there are many good reasons to make God up!
-Explaining the unexplainable, so much on earth can't be explained by science. Never in history has science explained many things. So its very easy to come up with a logical explanation that a God must have created this.Same goes for spirits like ghosts or UFO's they are logical explanations for things science cannot explain.
- Moral basis, its hard to say "I believe these things" without a basis for your beliefs. Imagine your some of the first humans on earth and try creating laws and a moral basis for these laws. You need justification a difference between right and wrong. Then who is to decide what is right and wrong, obviously a God is needed that or a dictator.
-Purpose, people want a reason for what they do. Nobody wants to hear that everything they do is pointless and their life serves no purpose. The idea that somebody created us and loves us and wants us is something that everyone can relate too.
-Hope , If their is no God and no heaven or hell (No after life) where is the hope? Your just going to die and be buried under ground and everything you did will be forgotten life will go on and nothing will come of your life. Where is the hope left?
- Competition , once won group of people create a God every other group wants a God. Look at a story from the Bible itself every nation had a king and Israel and the Jews wanted one. God stated that he was their king and that they didn't need one, they were to be set apart from the other nations. But the Jews insisted they wanted a King so God told through his prophets that he would give them their king. But he warned them that it was a mistake. Fact is everybody wants to be like everyone else. People will mimic each other and create new Gods.
-Heirarchy, people who create Gods and claim to be Gods prophet gain followers and often wealth. That wasn't the case when Christianity was founded those people were laughed at and persecuted through both acts of genocide and torture. But in many cases of new Gods like those that are created these days, people gain a lot of wealth and followers!
I could go on and on but their are many very good reasons for someone to invent a God.
