The people I play online with are ex-soldiers, military nuts, and cops. They prefer the "realism" of Call of Duty to the sci-fi world of Halo.

I noticed that too. My COD friends seem to think COD is the most realistic game out there. They seem to have the belief that they're hardcore because the game takes place in a modern setting. Like I always say, COD is the hardcore game for casuals & the casual game for the hardcore. There's nothing wrong with that though. Acti has done a great job at making the series mainstream while at the same time making the fans seem like they're part of some elite group.

I will say this though. COD is the most content packed modern shooter out there. With a fast-paced exciting campaign, a rarely-seen local multiplayer, packed with a competent online system, with smooth, appealing gameplay (something most games lack). Add that with the common belief that it's hardcore and you gotcha yourself a sure success. Things like killstreaks, perks, attachments, etc all help cement that hardcore belief.

That's just my opinion
