Right now Canada is looking to increase trade with their existing trading partners, and enter into new free trade agreements. If successful, they should be able to compensate for the lost trade from the US due to protectionist measures in a relatively short period of time. In contrast, the protectionist measures taken by the US government could encourage reciprocation from several trading partners at the same time (resulting in further damage to the US economy).
