Actually Apple is not one of the best MP3 players, it's one of the most non-techi friendly MP3 players and managed to strike up a trend. In all ways from sound quality, price, and file support the Creative Labs MP3 players blow the ipod out of the water.
Also I'm pretty sure sony started up making audio products didn't it?
