Competition is good, anyone who says differently...well we know where there coming from with that. Its so good to see most people think the comp is good too. U think Ninty being by itself is good?? Please, how quickly we forget the dick head days of Ninty in the NES/SNES era. Ninty is not a saint, everything they do does not benefit the industry. Like sticking to cartridges even though it was more expensive than discs, and when they moved to disc they did if half ass(mini discs?) and we would probably still be in the stone age when it came to internet gaming. Sony by itself would probably be worst, they would charge the crap out of you and smile about it. and MS would sell you even more crap that didnt work |
I'll assume the last part was directed at me since no one else really said they want Sony and MS to burn.
Anyway, while I am not trying to say that Nintendo is perfect (you missed my point - even if it was somewhat vague - Nintendo will never harm the industry intentionally), you need to learn your video game history. Nintendo tried to work with CDs almost as soon as it was a good idea. You're making it sound like they stuck stubbornly to cartridges even though they were actually trying beyond awfully hard to work with CDs. PlayStation was originally Nintendo's idea, you know? The reason Nintendo was resentful towards this technology during the fifth generation was most likely because they had a horrible time fixing a deal with anyone concerning CDs.
As for online, I would dare to argue that Nintendo would have a better online system if it weren't for competition. That's because, in this generation, they decided that they needed to differentiate themselves from MS and Sony or suffer an even more niche market, which I suppose Nintendo wouldn't stand for. They couldn't dream of outdoing them in being hi-tech so they gave up on that aspect completely, including online. Not saying they'd have as great an online system as other systems have, but they'd likely have a better one.
I'm still not understanding the "competition makes everything better" attitude, though. For something as useless, subjective and available-from-a-million-and-one-other-sources such as entertainment, competition doesn't really encourage companies that much more. Nintendo has to maintain its quality or it'll stop selling altogether. It needs to increase its quality to increase its market. Sony and MS never enter the equation. Competition, here, mainly just adds to the stress and can often lead to companies trying the safe route in order to protect what they have rather than being experimental and aiming for more. I mean, the Wii was completely out of the blue. If it were a normal company, Nintendo would attempt to hold onto whatever audience it had left and create a Super Gamecube or something, rather than gamble the 20m supporters it still had.
