"So it is not much of a stretch to say that SSBB will outsell GTA4 (both versions) f"
Bah if you take a close look at attachment rates you will see that the 10 good Gamecube games (all Nintendo) (yes I am exaggerating) all have a huge attachment rate. Much higher than anything on the PS2.
There are two reasons:
1) The percentage of hardcore (Nintendo/Sega/Sony/Microsoft) fans is much higher for the loosing system
2) If there is nothing to play the remaining good games will be bought by a higher percentage.
For the same reason I bought Heavenly Sword last year , a game I would have bought as Budget title in the future if there had been anything to play for the PS3.
This gen the situation is reversed. The Wii has a broad userbase with lots of casual players and it has the biggest marketshare. So extrapolating from Gamecube marketshare is pretty much the worst thing you can do.
And damn I have sworn to myself that I wouldn't start with this "Let's make a prognosis based on past numbers and some wild guesses"-thing everyone does here.
But my 2Cents: Smash doesn't stand a chance. I didn't even know it before coming to this forum because I never had a Nintendo console. Everyone knows Mario but Smash Brothers sounds to me as if it will be adored by old-time Nintendo fans but ignored by the new gamers. But I wouldn't dare to package this as analysis
