Still all accessible areas in FF X together are bigger than Gran Pulse. At least they felt so. And as someone else replied you can walk to nearly all places. Also there are the hidden areas. The minigames. Sid. Blitzball!!To split FF X in multiple discs is much harder than to split FF XIII which was linear (and kind of repetitive. Technically as well) for 11 chapters. If not impossible.
To keep it in a DL DVD only? Sure it is possible. Just raising the resolution and upscaling the FMVs. The Blu Ray version would benefit from the higher capacity just having less video and audio compression. Which maybe it is what it will happen anyway. This is the first FF HD remaster after all.
But yet again, the expectations are high. They would be much lower if it had to go to both console. Since MS doesn't allow to have a much more dumbed down version of the same game in their console (search the articles about MS rule to publish games in the X360). In other words, if SE surpasses itself with FF X HD, that won't fit in the X360.
