I don't know if Vita is the last hope for handheld gaming, but I do hope both 3DS and Vita still successful enough to prove that dedicated handheld gaming is still alive and kicking....
I love smartphone gaming too especially just for quick play, but, in my experience, they can't replace handheld gaming games, at least, not for me.....
