Exactly, so wouldn't some potential new PS3 owners get a PSV instead? They are both $250 machines after all, and most Japanese gamers have migrated to handhelds.

It's a possibility, especially when you factor in that some games will have both a Vita and PS3 version, like Dragon's Crown, which I guess will be pretty much the same on both platforms. Of course, the Vita complements the PS3 and I think a lot of people will buy it to do just that.

So you are saying that the customers who buy a PSV instead of a PS3 will be offset by the PS3 owners who buy a PSV as well?

Moreorless, I think it will offset between those two. I own a PS3 and I know I will be getting a Vita down the line because of the exclusives (some are enhanced ports) and some bit of cross-platform play.
