Why should a mutated Virus turn people into freaks ? (some people really believe that, they think mutations are unnatural or something). Viruses/Humans/Plants/Animals/Insects mutate all the time. 99.99999% of all mutations are not beneficial for the organism anyway.
We are using viruses already in medicine. Their abilitys are neccessary for the future aslong as we dont have nanobots. They could repair the genom of humans one day make them young again increase their lifespan cure cancer. Not only as delievery system but they have the ability to overwrite humans DNA in all reproducing cells and cure tons of illnesses. Thats what Viruses do they go into your cells and overwrite your DNA in a way to trick your cell into producing more viruses. Sure its decades away until we have enough knowledge to use them, but the progress in medicine would be a quantum leap.
