Next millenium? In several billion years? Nobody knows. Mankind will only have a chance of survival if by the time we have found a way to live on another planet or in space."
We do know a rough time scale when it will happen. The age of planet surfaces is determined through the number of impact craters. Venus has few so surface is young. Moon has a lot surface is old.
A huge catastrophic impact should happen roughly every 100 Million years like the impact that lead to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Bigger impacts than that every 500 Million years. But its possible to prevent impacts like these by spotting those asteroids/comets early and slowly alter their path.
