well we humans cant take our own guilt and blame all our problems on someone else, mostly a divine power of some sort. Humans also like to belong in groups, many dont like being alone and want to be apart of a community. People need to have belief they can do something in times of adversity and need someone to help guide them.
Religion provides all of the above, which is why its so compelling still even tho in the age of universal education, its clear that a divine power doesn't exist and stuff in the bible (or some other reglious text) is false as well. But thats doesn't matter and as long as there is something that binds us together under a single community, people will believe anything. look at Scientology, that crap is mental yet the reason its popular is its tight nit community.
