Sony - PS4 in 18 months? - View Post

I wouldn't be surprised to see PS4 on the market in 18 months. While agree PS3 is just hitting its stride and it hasn't made up the profits it lost at launch, that doesn't mean the console could last long in a new generation.

If WiiU launches and even more so if the next X-Box launches, both supposedly happening this year then Sony would need to launch or be left behind. Now they could stick with the PS3 a while and then release a more powerful system then the competition in say 2014. However this would alienate developers and consumers.

If PS4 was drastically more powerful then WiiU and Nex-Box then developers would need to produce games exclusively for their console. That or port games which look and perform pretty inferior to Sony's expectations. Also Nintendo and Microsoft will have built up a user base of several million users and it would be extremely difficult for Sony to play catch up. Not to mention Nintendo's five year cycle would end in 2017 and the next system would come out leaving Sony to cut their generation short or play catch up yet again.

So while I agree PS3 is a great product and just now hitting its strides. If Nintendo and Microsoft both launch soon then Sony needs to launch a response with PS4. The upgrade may not look as drastic as PS3 from PS2. But Sony can't afford to loose market share and developer support!
