I'm not sure what you are speaking about - Mass Effect 1 is comparable in size to Kotor series and ME2 is actually much much smaller with tons of absolutly linear maps.
Majority of games today are scripted corridors with a lot of awesome things happening on the way but the size of maps is relatively small.
