Really big sales on any console have to target the casual audience or have a large marketing effort. Let's look at the top 20 games of the year, by sales in the US:

Wii Sports - Bundled. Casual. Heavily advertised
Halo 3 - So heavily advertised it made us all puke
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl - Casual. Heavily Advertised
Wii Play - Casual. Bundled with a controler. Heavily advertised.
Forza Motorsport 2 - Bundled. Heavily Advertised
Super Mario Galaxy - Not quite so heavily advertised, but it's freaking Mario.
Guitar Hero 3 - Casual. Heavily advertised
Nintendogs - Casual. Some advertisements
Call of Duty 4 - Heavily Advertised.
Mario Party 8 - Casual. Heavily Advertised
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - Casual. Bundled. Some Ads
Guitar Hero 2 - Casual, Heavily Advertised.
Madden - Casual. Heavily Advertised.
Assassin's Creed - Heavily Advertised
Super Mario DS - Heavily Advertised. More Mario
Twilight Princess - Heavily Advertised. Big Franchise. The only serious game in the console for MONTHS
Motorstorm - Casual. Heavily Advertised.

And I could continue for a while until I found a game that had a very small ad campaign and sold copies, like Diddy Kong Racing DS, which at least has a recognizable name.
