When life is going reasonably well, and it looks like things are fine, people usually don't feel a need to turn beyond this world for answers. Atheism is a luxury of a lack of belief, generally only afforded by those who are doing reasonably well in life. When yiou are in the majority, wealthy, and well educated, you usually don't feel that much is going wrong, and are content enough to feel you don't need to believe in "superstition".
