I swear a rookie makes this mistake EVERY single time.

When you are downloading files, it is indicating to you the speed in bytes.  A byte is 8 bits.  When you are talking about what your internet speed is (what your IP says they offer or what speedtest shows, etc), it is always in bits.  So if you multiply your download speed by 8, that is what your internet is actually downloading stuff at in bits.
