I have one. What is a youth pastor? |
A youth pastor is someone that usually runs the youth group at a given church. I guess Europe doesn't have these, so I will explain:
In America, many churches have what are called youth groups. Its essentially the members of the church between ages 12-20. As the youth pastor, I am responsible for teaching Bible Studies to the kids once a week, and planning activites/events for them through the month. Generally, these are activities that are either community driven (such as feeding the hungry at a local soup kitchen, or a back-to-school event where we give out food & school supplies to the poor), or activity driven (attending a Christian concert, going to various sporting events, essentially things that are fun that some youth may not be able to afford that we pay for, and so on).
Additionally, I am responsible for a youth service we have once a month. We do these on Sunday nights, which are essentially a youth-driven version of a regular Sunday morning church service. Heavy metal/rock-driven praise & worship vs. traditional worship, a message, then food & games after service.
That is it in the nutshell. In the US, you generally have pastors over childrens, youth and adult ministries, with the adult pastor being the one that generally is the head of the church, with childrens/youth playing supportive roles.
Eventually, my goal is to build a youth center in our community where everyone can come to, free of charge, and enjoy activities such as mini-golf, arcades, basketball, and concerts in a Christian atmosphere (e.g. no cursing, drugs, alcohol, or smoking).
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
