The fate of Gears of War 3 character Carmine will not be revealed until the game's release.
Last year, Epic Games ran a promotion that saw players decide whether the character lives or dies by buying Avatar T-shirts, whichraised over $150,000 (£91,000) for charity.
President Mike Capps told attendees at gamescom 2011 that the publisher wrote both endings into the game in case it was released in advance.
"We actually wrote both [endings] in the game just in case the game leaked so no-one would be able to tell what happens," he said.
"And so we won't tell you now. [On] September 20 everyone will find out."
Gears of War 3 appeared on torrent websites last month, with Epic stating that the leak was "not from a final build" of the game.
The firm has since warned that posting spoiler videos online could lead to an in-game ban.
