Religion was one of the chief reasons why people had feelings of 'racial superiority'. In the past evolution was even applied to religions, Western people claming that monotheism (mainly christianity) was the most evolved form of religions on the planet. Thus populations who believed in non-monotheistic religions were labeled as 'primitive' and 'inferior'. However, (misguided) evolutionary theories weren't that important when it came to the hatred against Jews. They were just another reason to hate them, not the chief reason (note, referring only to the Jews here).
