In christianity women were actually considered to be inferior to men. Don't know about actual scriptures, but if you read works of some notable christian philosophers, you'll see that they considered animal excrements above women. The reason why the lines have blurred in churches today is because churches don't wanna alianate people (youcan't get away with treating women as being inferior nowadays).

Are you essentially saying that there were no Christians back then? 'Cause this was the view shared by pretty much all Crhistians back then, especially people like important Chruch figures or saints.

And the whole 'they aren't inferior, they have different roles' is quite convenient when men are the ones who hold all the power, and women need men to survive. They have different roles, just the roles aren't equally good. Not to mention that those roles are based on socially constructed gender roles, that do not take into account people's aptitudes and desires.
