That's not entirely true. The DS didn't look so promising at the beginning, it's fortunes went way up in 2006. But the Wii looked promising from the beginning, at least to everyone besides the game industry. In fact, Nintendo shares jumped to their highest value since 2001 in 2006 on the day when they fully unveiled the Wii.

Their presentation was amazing back in E3 2006. I'm not surprised that investers saw promise in the device.
