That's not entirely true. The DS didn't look so promising at the beginning, it's fortunes went way up in 2006. But the Wii looked promising from the beginning, at least to everyone besides the game industry. In fact, Nintendo shares jumped to their highest value since 2001 in 2006 on the day when they fully unveiled the Wii.

Well no one believed it would be the top selling console but that it would do better than GC. Even when it was selling huge amounts of consoles people thought it was a fad and that sales would fall very fast.
