'I also want to note that the other rationale about having the price drop now is that our arms are wide open for Xbox 360 and Wii consumers to come aboard the platform. We knew with the software lineup we have--primarily on the PS3--the time was right to say we're open to all gamers, whether it's a second console for the household or a new one on the family demographic side. '
This is just too funny. The only gamers that the PS3 is going to appeal to is the core 360 crowd, most certainly not the Wii userbase, and not the majority of people buying 360's right now (kinect)
PS3 is incredibly unappealing as a family/casual console.
Taht said, we're 5 years in, are there many core gamers that are either A) not settled/content with their console and B) already a dual owner? If so it's a small market IMO.

According to who? PS3 is a very good choice for a family/casual console, especially if you're looking for a console that offers every type of experience, in core gaming, casual gaming, and a family device capable of playing BLU RAY movies, 3D movies, 3D content, 3D games, everything you could think of..
it's a very good console for the family, and why wouldn't it appeal to the family crowd in the same way the ps2 appeald to the family crowd last gen..

Common sense leo, just like when MS thought they could appeal to casuals with Banjo and Viva. (and failed like everyone expected)
They have the aspect of Blu Ray, which I wouldn't attribuit to casual gamers, but game wise? no.
