The mayans never predicted that the world is going to end...
For them this is the third time (i'm not sure, it may be fouth or fifth time) the world is going to end. But for them the meaning of that is "the world as we know it". After this, according to them, the calendar resets., and "a new era begin".
So, what the mayans really sayd was that in 2012 there was going to be a radical change, and the world is going to be different (this can be political, economical, a natural disaster, everything).

I quote a TV show ""The 21st century is when everything changes. And we have to be ready."  (Yes I know it doesn't relate to 2012 directly).

Have you seen the show Apocalypse Island on Discovery or history? There is an island that they think has one giant statue on it that was made specifically for the end in 2012. I cannot remember what it was they were supposed to see from space though.
