Don't forget about JRPGs, especially strategy JRPGs. Games like Disgaea prove it can still work. These niche RPGs can't really make the jump to 3D (and especially HD 3D) since they target too small an audience to justify the budget, yet aren't especially suited for handhelds (though we're seeing quite a few on DS/PSP anyway). I'd expect companies like NIS and Atlus to be making 2D console games for a long time to come. Either that or they'll just go belly up, but I think there's still enough of a market for it.
