Seriously, every last person that's thinking you're crazy for that is a cretin.
The engagement ring I bought my wife cost $1500 (give-or-take), and that's fairly cheap for one (of quality, at least), too. You can get 'em much cheaper... if you want to sacrifice quality. Her wedding band cost $300.
This ring is a sign of how much this person means to you. It's an outward display of affection, and it's expensive for a reason - because she's supposed to mean that much to you.
Congratulations on the purchase, and good luck in the future. Hopefully you'll be where I am today in about two years. =)
