USA has the highest incarceration rate. Why?

Locking people up is a business in the U.S. People profit from it. I'm from Jamaica and we don't have lax sentences as the U.S. but people don't profit from another's incarceration either. Too many benefit from someone else being locked up in the U.S. for the prison population to become any smaller.
