Funny you say white people have never had to face prejudice.  A HUGE number of scholarships (around here anyways) are solely for people of a different ethnicity.  But there are absolutely no scholarships that are only for white people.  What this means is 100% of scholarships are open to people of ethnicity, and, just as an estimate, only 70% are available to me as a white male.

I know perfectly well that we treated the Africans like absolute shit back in the day (and some people still do nowadays).  If they want to be equal, however, treat them equal.  Having considerably more scholarships available just because you are a different ethnicity is not treating them equal, it is treating them better than us.  Don't get me wrong, I know they are still treated unequaling in certain areas, but with something such as this, it would be SO easy to make it into a system that treats everybody equally, and that would simply involve not allowing scholarships to be based on ethnicity.

Those scholarships were instilled in a time when it was impossible for non-whites to get a scholarship (or even get admitted to a school/university). Their purpose is to make sure that non-white people (as a group) are represented sufficiently in schools/universities and that future generations of non-whites are educated. It's a way to achieve equality at an accelerated rate (else either prejudice or socio-economic constraints would make it impossible for non-whites to ascend in society.

Making a system that treats everybody equally requires everybody wanting everyobdy treated equally, which had not been and still is not the case.

regardless, those contraints largey don't really exist anymore.

So you have to ask...  what makes a poor white person not worthy of help when compaired to poor people of other races?

Let alone say... races like Asian people who actually have the stereotype of being BETTER then average when it comes to inellegence.

It's easy to call such systems just when you look at things from the terms of trying to get some numbers of certain categories to line up....

but when you look at the indivdual people effected... it's harder to justify race based polcies.

It gets even trickier when you realize a lot of the people who benefit from race based scholarships are likely middle class or higher, because they are well... more prepaired for economic success since the scholarships just look for people of a certain race who are likely to succeed.

So you often end up with poor people not being able to get into college while rich or middle class people of another race get a free ride.  Are these scholarships largely helping black people rise up in society, or are they being largely used to seperate the Upper and Middle class of black people from the poor?

These reasons are why a lot of people prefer need based funding.  You get money based on your need, no matter who you are.
