Ummm, Mariah Carey has an incredible voice.

I can concede you about the voice in itself, although I don't particularly like it, but it's that whining style of singing that she contributed a lot to make popular that I really hate. Dionne Warwick, Carla Thomas, Amii Stewart and many others, not to mention goddesses like Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin, all have (or had) incredible voices, far better than Mariah, but they DON'T whine!

I doubt that style of singing started with Mariah. Singers, especially Divas, usually have a way of exaggerating when they sing (see Celine Dion, whose hand gestures durign singing  make her even more guilty of this).

Fair enough, although Celine Dion's style is more "sugary" than "whining".    I mentioned Mariah because she's the whining one that I happened to listen the most, against my will, as for some periods TVs and radios broadcasted her songs a lot here. Also, Mariah's voice is quite higher pitched than Celine's, it makes the whining more obnoxious. Anyway, again, it's a lot matter of my personal tastes, also in the operas, tenors and sopranos are the voices I like the least, also for their tendency to Divas attitudes, as you poited out, and their uncanny love for trills (even the best opera writers of XIX century were often forced to add trills and the like under sopranos' and tenors' pressure to titillate their virtuosity and egos).

Mariah was very influenced by them if I'm not mistaken, so it's no wonder you hate her.
