That is because the trade-ins are determind (and run, for that matter) by a third party company.  Amazon then has a deal with this third party company that rather than giving these individuals checks as every other trade in company will do, they will give you an Amazon gift card.  The whole process is done in Amazon, leading many to believe Amazon is the one deciding everything with the trade-ins, but they aren't.
