Islam was all under one branch at one point until the assassination of one of the relatives of Prophet Muhammad, a man named Al-Husayn, whom we call "the martyr of martyrs". Then we split into Sunni (the biggest branch) and Twelver Shia Islam (it's a long and debated story on how it happened). Then it began to divide further:

Zaydi Shia

Sufism

Alawi Shia

Fatimi Shia

Ibadhi Islam

Ahmadiyya

Baha'i

Ismaili

Ahbash

Druze

Loooots of 'em, but these are what come to mind. With the exception of the Zaydis, whom equate to nearly half of Yemen's population, and Alawis, whom are a significant minority in Syria, they're all pretty small communities.

 

Now as for soldiers: This is humanity. You're placing too much stock in their ability to think and/or especially act for themselves under such a repressive regime. The people on top have stronger authority on the soldiers than you can imagine.

Let's just hope we see more mass defections.
