I hear GamePro doesn't like the Wii much yet they still gave the game an 87%. Pretty sure you're underestimating what the game will get. Persona 4 came out December 2008 on the PS2 yet it still is a 90+ game. Why? Because it's an excellent game. We've already known Xenoblade is the same from people who played it in Japan.

It might be my imagination, but I feel as though console games get penalized a lot by reviewers for not doing what the reviewer thinks the game should have done, moreso than what the game actually did wrong. Sometimes I read reviews and see negatives that don't necessarily detract from the quality of the game itself, like complaining about a lack of multiplayer options in a primarily single player game, or no riveting online features when it's not really needed. I can see this being the case with Xenoblade. Such trifling issues like no DLC quests can quite easily be used as an excuse to knock the game down a peg. Not saying that's guarunteed to happen, but you never know.

Then there're issues like the genre not being as popular as it once was in the past. I can't argue against why Persona 4 averages above 90% on aggregate sites, maybe it was just that good, but that was a while ago, and Xenoblade is a different beast. It will be directly compared to games like Final Fantasy XIII (which may very well benefit the game in some areas, but will no doubt hinder it in others), but I can also see it being more indirectly compared to some western RPG's like Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls, at least in terms of the size of the overworld and what is possible within the boundaries of the games world, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

I still stand by my original post, however, and fully expect reviewers to pick at the issues I brought up before, even though they are minor quibbles at best and don't really destroy the experience, the character models and voice acting especially I can see getting picked on as major flaws.

I'm totally open to the possibility that I'm underestimating the title itself, though. I do hope I'm wrong, the game deserves 90%+. Universal worldwide acclaim for Xenoblade may just be the confidence booster Nintendo needs to take Monolith's projects a bit more seriously.
