They actually even "profilatically" (speling?) give condoms away at big events such as carnaval, for example. This might not be the case in some very small locations, but that's just a guess and seen as the problem exists in areas where the coverage is good, i'd say it's not the main reason for it to exist. Sex ed is a bit more complex. In schools i guess it varies a lot when it comes to specifc sex ed classes, but the subject is supposed to be given a lot of importance in science/biology classes "earlier" on. I'm sure there's some adjustments for the widely different realities there. I for one only attended public school in highschool, and it was a relatively "well-off" one, but even in the catholich school I attended up until about I was fifteen we had talks about that at around grade 5. I'm sure time has only made the situation more open since then. Another aspect is off-school sex ed. the media, for example, does do a fair bit to help (amazing, uh?), both with reports on the issue of teenage pregnancy, prevention and urging parents to talk, etc, and in using the issue itself as a theme to be explored in things like soup operas. There government programs and various ongs working on it, some in more direct ways, It sure could be better but I'd say all in all awareness of the situation and how to prevent it is pretty high when compared to the number of cases, and that's the reason I say it comes down to family and the conditions in which the child grows up more than anything else. (My first reaction to the tittle was to laugh. Then I felt bad for the girl. Then I felt like an ass. Then I said w/e.) |
