Simple. These other media are not dominated by first and foremost violent products. If it weren't for FIFA and PES, it would look even worse.

most of the movies that do well are action oriented ones with shooting, violence etc ( the dark night was the highest grossing movie ever i believe )
furthermore wii sports is the highest selling game this gen by a wide margin

Avatar is the highest grossing movie ever. Titanic comes after it. While lots of successful movies have violence, very few of them have gore, like most blockbuster video games.

Yet for all those soft movies you speak of, there is always a timely phenomenon like the SAW movies to counter your point.

The Saw movies aren't that successful. The entire franchise combined grossed less than the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
