Bingo. There's not a thing wrong with him dropping some big cash on the person he loves. As long as the guy isn't doing something irresponsible like getting his car repo'd to buy it, more power to him. It's symbolic, a tradition that one way or another goes back to cavemen, and it will be around long after cynicism over such things is no longer fashionable.
On that note, I dated my wife over 4 years before I popped the question. I got my divorce papers yesterday and officially have one failed marriage under my belt. tokilamockingbrd, God bless, best of luck, and have fun storming the castle.
