That would defeat the point of the ceiling, though i would generally approve of that. Not that i want excess debt, but it seems stupid to set an arbitrary number that both sides can just use as a political talking point, bitch and moan and in the end just raise the ceiling anyway to avoid financial catastrophe

It's a boondoggle, really.

It needs to be a law that you can't increase the debt limit.  That way the governemnt will spend within its means, the debt can be reduced and the inflation and devaluation of the curency will cease.

Giving them free reign to increase the debt ceiling or having no debt ceiling at all is just begging for hyper inflation.
